* Ontario Professional Planning Institute award
The Bird-Friendly Development Guidelines won a 2008 Excellence in Planning Award from OPPI. City Planning staff set up a committee of staff and community partners to identify bird-friendly development options to be used by architects, planners, urban designers, building owners and managers, tenants and homeowners. The extensively illustrated guidelines identify hazards and appropriate alternatives in building exteriors, lighting techniques, and building management methods.

* * 2008 Spring Launch
Mayor David Miller and Members of Toronto City Council announced the start of the 2008 Spring launch of Lights Out Toronto! This campaign calls on Torontonians to turn out unnecessary lighting at night so that birds, which become disoriented by city lights, are less likely to collide with buildings.

Bird-Friendly Development Rating System and Acknowledgement Program
The Bird-Friendly Development Guidelines illustrate how to make new and existing buildings less dangerous to migratory birds. The Development Rating System is a checklist for developers, building owners and managers to assess whether their new or existing buildings are bird-friendly according to the Guidelines. The checklist can be filled-in on-line or downloaded as a PDF form.  opens PDF document

The Acknowledgement Program is designed to award building owners and developers who commit to the guidelines, original art prints to be displayed in their lobby as a token of appreciation.
