The Scottish Association for Marine Science is one of the oldest oceanographic organisations in the world, with a complex history, a wide mission, and a range of activities and relationships. They are a multidisciplinary research laboratory with science staff from all the marine science disciplines and a core research programme on Northern Seas. Their research in environmental science was graded 4 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. They are a collaborative centre of the Natural Environment Research Council.

Besides research they are engaged in tertiary education, running an undergraduate honours degree course in marine science, and training research students. They are an academic partner in UHI Millennium Institute, a higher education institute aiming to create the University of the Highlands and Islands by 2007.
