Zerofootprint Waterloo Region: “zerofootprinted by rare”

Waterloo Region, containing one of only two North American cities nominated for the 2006 Intelligent Communities award, has just become the first community to adopt a Zerofootprint mandate.

The Zerofootprint Waterloo Region office is located at the rare Charitable Research Reserve (www.raresite.org) a not-for-profit organization that exists to preserve and restore 913 acres of environmentally sensitive land one of the fastest growing areas of the country and the fourth-largest centre of immigration in Canada. The rare lands provide a permanent home and living laboratory for scientific study and research, research-based education programs, archaeology and trails.

Zerofootprint Waterloo Region will be the model of sustainable living and can be promoted for expansion across the country. Organizations currently working on being Zerofootprinted by rare include The Waterloo Regional Children’s Museum www.thechildrensmuseum.ca, The Centre for International Governance Innovation www.cigionline.org and Southworks Outlet Mall www.southworks.ca .
