Wangari Maathai’s Green Belt Movement has planted more than 30 million trees, as well as seeds of hope for women and the rural poor of Kenya. Maathai defied custom, tradition, and her own government to carry out the groundbreaking reforestation and human rights work that won her Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. The first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a PhD and to head a university department, Maathai went on to receive the Woman of the Year award twice, the Goldman Environmental Prize, and the Edinburgh Medal.
Environmentalist and social activist Dr. Wangari Maathai will take you on a stirring journey from a subsistence farm in Africa to her place as a visionary on the world stage.
