Mow Down Pollution

Starts: Thursday April 19, 2007

Schedule: Runs 11 days between 2007-04-19 and 2007-04-29

Organizer: Clean Air Foundation

Venue: The Home Depot

Location: Canada

Mow Down Pollution encourages Canadians to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution by retiring their old gas lawn mowers and trimmers. Gas powered lawnmowers release about 80,000 tonnes of emissions in Canada every year and use about 151 million litres of gasoline. Reducing ground-level pollution helps people with asthma and existing respiratory conditions.

Why retire your standard 2-stroke gas lawnmower or trimmer? Here’s an interesting fact: Using a standard gas mower for one hour emits the same amount of common air pollutants as driving a new car for almost 600 km. That’s from Toronto to Montreal!

The event will take place between April 19 – 29th at 160 Home Depot locations across Canada. People who bring in their old mowers to be retired and properly recycled can receive up to $100 to purchase a new environmentally friendly alternative – push-reel or low emission lawnmowers or trimmers, at The Home Depot. Since the programs inception in 2001, we have retired and recycled over 12,000 gas lawnmowers and trimmers, resulting in the reduction of 270 tonnes of emissions.
